Do You Notice The Wind?

by Brit Xavier

With the world's population having relied on oil for so long, it's hardly surprising that there is now much concern with regards to saving the planet. As a result, an increasing amount of people are starting to look for alternative energy sources in order to power their homes and businesses. While many companies are investigating the many possibilities regarding solar power, it is interesting to note that wind power has been around since for a very long time. From the very first windmills used for grinding wheat and corn, to the modern day wind farms, the wind can provide us with an endless source of renewable energy.

Wind is not always in readily available but having said that, as long as you have a breeze with an average wind speed of 10mph or more, you can use the wind power low voltage turbines. In fact, it's possible to reduce your monthly electricity bills by 50 to 90 percent. Interestingly enough, some people who live in cool areas where air conditioning is unnecessary, have a monthly bill of between 8 and fifteen dollars throughout the year.

The average home uses a somewhat under 9000 KWh of electricity a year, averaging around 780 a month. Depending on your family needs and the continued wind speed in your location, a wind turbine of only 5-15 kilowatts would cut this consumption down measureably.

Given the very nature of wind turbines, one should realize that it's necessary to have an adequate amount of space. In fact, one should ideally have approximately an acre of land. Remember, even small wind turbines which are mounted on towers measuring a foot or less, also require a suitable amount of space.

Unfortunately, if you live in an area where the average wind speed is under 10mph, then you need to acknowledge the fact that a wind turbine may not be ideal. On the other hand, it is interesting to note that wind powered homes can be found in 47 states. The many of these however are located in the Northeast and the Midwest.

The undeniable fact is; wind generators benefit the environment in may ways because not only do they reduce noise pollution, but they also reduce the demand for grid supplied electricity. Nowadays, it has become common practice for utility companies to actually pay people for any excess electricity they may have. For many people, it is almost unbelievable when they first see their electric meters spinning backwards, knowing that they are not only helping to save the environment, but also that they are being paid for it.

In fact, there are now more and more companies beginning to realize just how profitable wind power can be, which is why one can see wind farms springing up everywhere nowadays. Interestingly enough, there are even an increasing number of farmers who are becoming involved with wind farms in order to make a reliable income.

Irrespective of what changes you make, be it that you start turning off the lights when not in use, or be it that you decide to start using a wind generator, it is absolutely vital that we all begin making some changes in order to preserve this wonderful planet.
