We first thought we would battle to actually follow these diy energy plans, but once we got stuck into the Homemade Power Plant guide, the advice and instruction was great. Homemakers and home improvement fanatics will love this guide - we really had to learn as we went along, since customer support was quick but not that much help.

What we like about it:

1: Great illustrations:

Home Made Power Plant had by far the best diagrams. They were well-labeled for the solar plans, easy to follow, colorful, and mostly to scale. And most importantly they were large enough to see what was going on in them.

2: Awesome free gifts

The information on the maintaining the systems, and getting the legal aspects of the systems sorted out was comprehensive and useful. We particularly liked the strategies of saving power - they were so simple, yet most of us overlook them. And the best part is, these tips have already helped us save hundreds of dollars over the past 4 months.

3: Improves your home's value:

We have to admit that this advantage actually applies to all the diy energy guides on the market, but it is a huge plus. We were told that renewable energy systems add value to your home. We were not so sure that was true, so we decided to get the house valued before and after. We were really amazed! After adding 2 home wind turbines and 2 solar power systems, they had added $5000 to the value of our home. The funny thing was that the valuer thought the systems were professionally installed!

The Negatives:

1 - Miscommunication with customer support

We were not very impressed with customer support. We were not sure about the right way to wire up our solar panels to the house. So we decided to contact customer support. But when they replied all they said was, "Read over the chapter in wiring again. It is all there." But what they did not understand was that our circumstances were different to what was outlined in the guide. Luckily we had experience in diy projects, so we managed to figure it out on our own.

Verdict

With the best drawings, and helpful free advice, Homemade Power Plant was well written enough for someone with limited technical know-how to follow. The instructions were rather simple to understand, and though customer support could not help us, at least they replied relatively quickly.
